Manufactured by Wavell-Huber Wood Products inc. Los Alamitos, CA (original Frank designs, manufactured by Ecart furniture Paris, France).
A 2nd larger table of similar style and design is found in the Grand Chai.
Scott Johnson, the chief architect for Opus One, chose these Jean-Michel Frank tables (for the Gallery and Chai).
Jean-Michel Frank was a French interior designer known for minimalist interiors with sumptuous furnishings. He was a first cousin to the famous Anne Frank. He is most famous for designing the “Parsons Table”. He fled war torn France and ended up in New York where sadly, he committed suicide in 1941.

Children and grandchildren of Opus One employees – assorted media.
In 2010, Michael Silacci, our Wine Maker, decided to make olive oil from our olive trees. Our olive trees, throughout our property (in the Courtyard, along our main driveway, on the north and south sides of our building) are all California Mission Olives – indigenous to California and were planted in 1990 as a tribute to Mr. Robert Mondavi and his roots in California.
The intention was to have olive oil for the employees whenever the trees produced enough olives to do so. Michael needed a label for the bottles, so he told all the employees of Opus One that any children or grandchildren from 2-18 years old should submit a drawing of what they thought the label should be. A contest. But no. Michael had 7 submissions and made labels for each child’s drawing, so they all were winners.
Michael has continued this tradition ever since, making olive oil (the olives are typically harvested a month or so after our grape harvest) every year there are enough olives to do so. Labels continue to be from submitted artwork from the Opus One children and grandchildren, all included.

Six Mission olive trees, estimated to be 100-150 years old.
Additional olive trees are also found in along the driveway, along the sides of the building, and on the north edge of the vineyard (butting up against Nickel & Nickel).
These trees were planted as a tribute to Mr. Robert Mondavi. California Mission Olives are indigenous to California so this tribute is to Mr. Mondavi’s roots here in California.

Joey Africa is Filipino and lives in Chicago. He is also a Sommelier. He has been painting since he was 8 years old. He works with mixed media in bold colors.
Joey gifted the 5 paintings we have in our offices. They are all Orchids in homage to the prevalent orchid plants found throughout the winery.
“Painting is my saving grace. It provides purpose and meaning to my life. And the enjoyment I get from creating a new work is enhanced when I know the viewer also gets pleasure from it – through the revival of a beautiful memory or the engagement of the senses and mind in a new aesthetic encounter. Your participation is part of the creative process, which, in turn, renews my own passion for the immersive experience of painting.” Joey Africa 2020

Orchids were a favorite of Mrs. Mondavi and became THE plant at Opus One from the early 1990s. Orchids last a long time and have no aroma to interfere with the aromas of our wine.

Oil on canvas.
Richardo Mazal was born in Mexico City in 1950 and currently resides in Santa Fe NM.
He is often inspired by traditions in Mexico and local geography. This work, “Paynes Grey and White” was specifically inspired by photographs, followed by his personal pilgrimage trek of Mount Kailash, the ancient sacred site of the “sky burials” in Bhutan, a small country in SE Asia. His inspiration came from the obvious striations across the sacred mountain’s surface. He identified this as something he already incorporated in his abstract paintings. He felt a sense of destiny with this mountain as a result.
The texture of the lower half of the painting represents the snow on the mountain, the upper band of blue represents the colorful banners you see everywhere in Bhutan.
