Solnhofen Limestone, Germany
Jurassic Period Limestone “Jura Beige”
Solnhofen is a limestone quarry in Germany famous for its Jurassic period limestone. You can see fossils in the floor. The shallow lake was formed when fresh and salt water combined. The quarry is very shallow and wide, unlike many other stone quarries which are terraced and deep.
The Jurassic period was 200-144 million years ago in the Mesozoic Era – the era of “BIG DINOSAURS”

Limestone quarries founded in 1830.
This is the same cream limestone (called Cordova Cream) found throughout the original building, inside and out. Using limestone at Opus One is a tribute to Baron Philippe. Chateau Mouton Rothschild is also covered in limestone.

Rothschild Family private collection
Empire period (early 19th century) reproduction of a Louis XV mirror that is one of the first mirrors ever made with “sheet glass” (then called ribbon glass), rather than poured glass. It is a single pane of glass mirror, previously impossible to create in such a large size. It was quite experimental for it’s time – mass production of “sheet glass” did not occur until 1953!

Luc Janssens, 12 Photogravure Prints, 1994
In 1994, Luc Janssens created a book of 12 works of photogravure prints for Opus One in celebration of the 1st vintage, 1991, produced in the Opus One Winery.
Janssens has a master’s degree in fine arts from Brussels Belgium and a doctorate from the University of San Francisco. He has spent much of his career teaching art in many California colleges and universities.
PHOTOGRAVURE is a process of combining photography with etching techniques. It was first explored in the art world in France in 1816. It enhances or exaggerates the realism of the photograph.
These prints are all specific spots in the Opus One building and all hand signed by Luc Jenssens.
