Ceiling and doors, rough sawn Hemlock
Hemlock (also known as Tsuga in Japan where it grows prolifically) is a conifer that when rough sawn gives the impression of suede. Though named Hemlock, it has NO relation to the poisonous plant Hemlock other than a shared aroma. It is primarily used for wood pulp in the US. On the East Coast of the US, Hemlock is endangered by a sap sucker bug (related to the aphid). It also grows in the Pacific North West.

In 2022 our Lab staff requested art work that reflected the actual work done in our lab. Todd Pickering, a photographer that has done many photos for Opus One over the years was called to address this request. The Lab staff picked from the photos taken by Todd and the 3 selected were mounted on board and hung in the Lab.
The beakers photo is of our own beakers sampling and testing the wine. The vine photo is of an immature cluster of grapes in our vineyard. Our Lab tests all parts of the vine, as well as the grapes at all stages of their development. The third photo is taken through a microscope and is a photo of one of our indigenous yeasts, named “squirrel” (a Lab favorite…).
