Brady Van Housen, an Opus One employee, was asked by Michael Silacci, our Winemaker to use some of our used Opus One barrels in a winery project. Brady’s first use is the “Brittany Bench”.
Made from our lightly sanded barrels, interior exposed as seating to emphasize the wine stain, and tubular carbon steel.

Original gilt bronze sculpture on ebonized wood stand.
Beniamino Bufano was an Italian who moved to California in 1901 and became a sculptor primarily working in stone and metal. His works can be found in numerous cities and parks and is exhibited in the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art, The courthouse in Honolulu Hi and John Hopkins University in Baltimore to name a few. He died in Northern California at the age of 80.
He was exhibited at the Robert Mondavi Winery in the late 1960s and several of his sculptures reside there to this day. He was a favorite artist of Margrit Mondavi.

Single piece maple burl.
A burl is a tree growth in which the grain has grown in a deformed manner. It is commonly found in the form of a rounded outgrowth on a tree trunk or branch that is filled with small knots from dormant buds. This is an exceptionally large, and rare burl.
The burl bowl was gifted to Opus One by Mrs. Mondavi.

Scott Johnson, chief architect for Opus One, from Johnson Fain Partners Los Angeles CA graduated from Stanford University and did graduate work at UC Berkeley and the Harvard Graduate School of Design.
Johnson has written several books on architecture, has taught at several universities and currently resides in Los Angeles CA.
The ceiling design follows the circlular theme found throughout the winery.
