A high school art class project in 2022, Serena Garaventa, daughter of an Opus One employee, chose to make a statement on the global climate crisis. Serena’s mom showed a photo of the painting to Michael Silacci who asked if it could be given to Opus One (at the time it was in the hands of Serena’s art teacher). Michael was so taken with this clear statement; he had the piece framed and is also in his email signature.

Quartz crystal, custom made 2015.
Kaye Fleming designed and hand made this one of a kind lamp specifically for Opus One. She used a large Quartz Crystal as the base.
Quartz is the second most abundant mineral (second to feldspar) in the world. It is forged from granite. The word “crystal” comes from the ancient Greek word meaning “ice”. In gemstone quality, it has been used in jewels in Europe since antiquity. The highest quality comes primarily from Spain and Brazil. Brazil boasts of the largest crystal found to date – 88,000 pounds. Famous quartz crystals – Amethyst, Citrine, Onyx, Tigers Eye, to mention a few.

Scott Johnson, chief architect for Opus One, from Johnson Fain Partners Los Angeles CA states; “… our intent to convey the sense of rationalism of French Classical architecture without being literal in details. …to have the building rooted to the California landscape and to use native oak and redwood throughout the winery to resonate a sense of the New World.”
Redwood is indigenous to California. The ceiling is designed to remind us of the inside of a wine barrel head.

Construction 2008 – 2009
Southeast corner of property
Construction was complete in 2009. Some exceptional features of the building include the surrounding clear story glass windows that give the building a distinctive glow, especially at dusk. We also installed Schweiss hydraulic and bifold doors for easy access to all our equipment and tractors. The roof is very low maintenance Zink. The building has a deliberate low profile so as not to compete with the main winery building. The extended roof eaves allow cooler conditions within the building. The building was dedicated to our very long-standing, beloved mechanic, Randy Zavala.
Befitting the growth of Opus One, in 2008, construction started in what is now our Vineyard Shop. The Vineyard Shop, housing all our vineyard equipment, repair shop and a few offices, is in the same location that occupied a converted 18th century stable that we completely grew out of.
Prior to actual construction, our winemaker, Michael Silacci instructed all Opus One employes to not park in the north east section of the rear parking lot. With chalk lines, he mapped out the dimensions of the new shop with Randy Zavala, our then shop manager. He then instructed Randy to physically put all our equipment within the chalk parameters. Good thing, the space was too small for our equipment, so size adjustments were made before the start of actual construction. Easier to expand chalk lines than knock down walls and rebuild…
