Toshi Yoshida, Japan 1911-1995.
Wood Block Print, Kyoto Japan 1954.
Toshi Yoshida followed in his fathers’ wood block printing footsteps coming into his own after World War II. Though his earlier works are primarily traditional landscapes and animals, in his later years, he became a leader in the Sosaku-Hanga Movement – an art movement of wood block printing which was conceived in early 20th century Japan. It stressed the artist as the sole creator motivated by a desire for self-expression, and advocated principals of art that are “self-drawn”, “self-carved”, and “self-printed”.

George Fischer graduated from the American Academy of Art in Chicago as a highly skilled technical realist. He moved to New Mexico bothered by the commonplace of this realistic style where he expanded to more complex imagery and is well known today as a still life surrealist painter.
Fischer has exhibited in Chicago, New Mexico and many other locations and has permanent installations in the Philbrook Museum, Tulsa, Frye Art Museum, Seattle, Harwood Museum of Art, Taos, to name a few.
“Regarding the empty clothing in Fischer’s paintings, it’s a statement regarding the passage of time. Often, objects remain after we have passed and they provide much of the continuity and context to our civilization”

Kala Stein, Ceramic Artist Sonoma CA 1979 –
Brown and Black clay, Porcelain, midnight blue and gold glaze 2013
Commissioned by Opus One in 2023, Kala Stein, a ceramic artist in Sonoma CA was challenged by the unusual alcove space in the South stairwell of our Terrace.
Kala created abstract sculptures of two-star constellations, Cassiopeia (the queen) and Lacerta (the lizard), specific to the location of Opus One in glazed ceramics, mounted on metal tubing and back lit with low voltage LED lighting. “The round star forms are a nod to the architecture of Opus One and the ‘clayness’ expressed in the surfaces of the stars reminds us how the earth, or terroir is so influential in wine making.”

In separate Forward Facing meetings held for selected team members from Guest Relations, the Cellar Crew and the future of Overture, Graphic facilitator Tom Benthin, was hired to put thoughts and visions of the future of the teams into graphic posters so all could see the big picture with step by step graphics. “When people can SEE what they’re talking about, they get SMARTER.” Tom Benthin. Our CEO, Chris Lynch asked Tom to distill those 3 sets of posters into 2 posters that reflected the forward facing vision for all of Opus One to 2030.

Scott Johnson was chief architect for the Opus One building and designed the rugs in the Salon as a favor to Mrs. Mondavi. Johnson was inspired by the artist Wassily Kandinsky. The design suggests rows of cypress trees and agricultural cultivation patterns. Mrs. Mondavi stated the rugs were meant to be “harmonious, bringing the two strong periods and continents together.”
